Job Description
A rapidly growing technology-driven organization in the insurance and financial services space is seeking an Engineering Manager, Developer Experience (DevEx), to lead a newly established team dedicated to improving the developer journey and software delivery lifecycle.
In this role, you will build and lead a team of Backend and DevOps engineers focused on creating scalable platforms, self-service tooling, and automation that empower engineering teams to deliver software more efficiently. You will play a key role in shaping developer productivity initiatives, driving AI-enabled engineering practices, and advancing platform engineering capabilities across the organization.
This is a hybrid position based in Waltham, MA, offering the opportunity to influence engineering strategy while partnering with globally distributed teams to deliver a best-in-class developer experience.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline
- 3+ years of experience leading Backend Engineering teams
- 5+ years of experience as a Backend Software Engineer in a cloud-first environment
- Experience managing and mentoring engineers across backend and infrastructure functions
- Strong technical knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes (K8s), and Infrastructure-as-Code
- Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives from concept through implementation
- Experience improving software development processes and developer productivity
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, collaboration, and organizational skills
- Strategic thinking with the ability to balance and prioritize multiple initiatives
- Experience building strong partnerships across engineering and business organizations
- Interest in applying AI technologies to improve software development workflows
- Familiarity with build tools such as Maven, Gradle, or Nx
- Understanding of testing frameworks and observability platforms
Desired Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in Developer Experience (DevEx), Platform Engineering, or Internal Developer Platform teams
- Experience establishing platform solutions using a Platform-as-a-Product approach
- Exposure to AI-powered development tools and automated software delivery processes
- Experience working with distributed or international engineering teams
- Background in high-growth, fast-paced technology organizations
What You Will Be Doing Daily Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Backend and DevOps engineers focused on developer enablement
- Execute a strategy for an AI-driven software development lifecycle that improves efficiency from design through deployment
- Develop and promote self-service platform capabilities that eliminate developer friction and accelerate delivery
- Partner closely with engineering leaders and stakeholders to understand developer needs and align platform investments
- Drive continuous improvements in CI/CD, infrastructure automation, developer tooling, and operational excellence
- Advocate for and implement Platform-as-a-Product principles across engineering
- Collaborate with engineering teams across multiple locations to establish shared standards and best practices
- Foster a culture of innovation, technical excellence, learning, and continuous improvement
- Measure and improve developer experience through feedback, metrics, and data-driven decision making
The Offer
- Base Salary: $173,000 – $234,000 annually
- Annual performance-based incentive opportunity
